Name: 2011 National Sheepdog Finals
Date: September 13, 2011 - September 20, 2011
Event Description:
The 2011 National Sheepdog Finals are coming to Carbondale! Plans are well underway to host this international sheepdog herding competition and welcome thousands of visitors to the Roaring Fork Valley for a week in September 2011.

To become more familiar with the event, we encourage you to visit our website at www.sheepdogfinals.com and view our new event video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPA2wF1Wa0k

The event is a unique partnership between Strang Ranch, United States Border Collie Handlers Association and Aspen Valley Land Trust (AVLT). The 2011 National Sheepdog finals will feature first-rate herding competition, and showcase land conservation, stewardship, and the region?s ranching heritage.

The venue is nothing short of spectacular. Strang Ranch sits just north of Carbondale on Missouri Heights with stunning views to the south of Mount Sopris and the West Elk Mountain Range. It?s no coincidence that Strang Ranch is held in conservation trust with AVLT.

This eight day event will include a food and craft fair as well as competition for 225 pre-qualified dog and handler teams. Only the best teams (from the U.S. and Canada) make the cut to compete for over $40,000 in purse money and the title(s) of 2011 National Sheepdog Champion and the 2011 National Nursery Champion (younger dogs). Eight hundred of Colorado?s notorious range yearlings (sheep) will be gathered from high alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains and delivered to Strang Ranch the day before the trial. These sheep will levy the necessary challenge to determine 2011 champions.

The Town of Carbondale is on board and is hosting evening activities in downtown Carbondale on Friday and Saturday evening ? September 16th & 17th, 2011. Friday night will include ?Cowboy Up Carbondale? which is a benefit event for a local charity. The evening includes an FREE outdoor concert, VIP tent with food and beverages. Saturday evening, downtown Carbondale again rolls out the welcome mat for the Block party, Free Outdoor Concert, Barbeque and Street fair, named ?Community Appreciation Night.? Both events include invitations to both local Carbondale citizenry, along with the participants and spectators of the 2011 National Sheepdog Finals. Join us in downtown Carbondale for two evenings of fun and entertainment!!

Additionally, we hope to include: a demonstrations of weaving, spinning and painting, a lamb cooking demonstrations; private receptions; outdoor music; stock dog handling demonstrations; a petting farm, rescue displays for regional border collie rescue groups; information and education on guardian livestock dogs; and fun for the entire family.

The sport of sheepdog trialing is growing in popularity in the United States. Just 80 miles away, the ever-popular Meeker Classic is held annually the week after Labor Day, and it will wind up just two days before the 2011 National Finals begins. The close proximity of the Meeker Classic and the timing will only build excitement and enthusiasm for the 2011 National Sheepdog Finals. The legendary Meeker Classic is a shining example of the impact a large sheepdog trial can have on a community.
